Square wedding invitations are a great way to set the style of your invitations apart immediately. One thing that people often do not consider when they are thinking about using this format is that the postage cost is going to be higher. The reason for this is that the envelopes do not easily go through postal machines and will have to be hand stamped. This may not necessarily be a bad thing though because it will help keep the envelope cleaner in transit and will also aid in keeping the invitations from possibly getting torn in the mail. You may even decide to forgo outer envelopes and opt for the square envelopes instead.

Another thing that should be considered when choosing square envelopes is the layout. Of course this should always be considered, but in the case of a square invitation this can limit the amount of space that is available for wording and graphics, so if there is a need for a large amount of these elements, it may be a good idea to reconsider the layout or add a folding square invitation, which would lend more space to the project.

Square wedding invitations often look best with some colored paper layers around the edges to add interest. In the form of a card it may be nice to do a square cutout on the front to emphasize the shape. It may also be considered that adding a photo to the piece would add to it because a square shape may be nice to use for use in a picture frame as a keepsake.

Square wedding invitations are unique most likely because of he added cost but they are actually becoming popular. If this is a layout that you would like to do, you should check with your local post office on the cost of postage because it might be as much as you think.

So what makes a wedding invitations traditional instead of modern, and which type is right for you. I think that it is important to not get too hung up on the rules, although understanding them and why they are in place is important. Primarily a wedding invitation should communicate the tone of the wedding and give the recipient the information that they need to get there and have some sort of idea of what to wear, for example whether it is a formal event or not. It should also be beautiful, of course. It is an added bonus if it communicates the couple’s style and personalities.

A traditional wedding invitation is usually created on a 5 x 7 light cream card, or an off white card. It is traditional to use inner and outer envelopes in order to protect the card and offer an added sense of formality. Typically a sheet of vellum is added to the front of the card in order to protect the design and to also enhance the formal aspects.

The items that are typically included in an invitation are:

An Inner Envelope

An Outer Envelope

The Wedding Invitation

The Response Card

The Reception Card

Whenever it comes to the type on the card, there are some specific rules that are followed. First of all the text should always be black whenever following the traditional style. The names of the people, parents for example, who are paying for the wedding, should also be on the card. If the couple is paying for the wedding then their parents’ names should not be put on the invitations. If both of their parents are paying then both sets of names should be put on the cards. It even goes as far as when the parents are paying their children’s last names should not appear, only their own last names.

Whenever it comes to creating the lines of text on the invitations, only the names, places and year should have capitalization. The location and the city and state should be listed, but never the full address!

I don’t know about you, but that just seems counter intuitive if you ask me! I personally think that a map should be added to the invitation. I believe that an invitation should be practical just as much as it is beautiful.

A traditional wedding invitation would never include the gift registry information, and I agree that this could easily appear a little unconsidered and perhaps could easily make you invitation appear tacky. Of course the way that this would traditionally be handled is that they would rely on word of mouth. Unfortunately the people that you will invite to your wedding will most likely be very scattered, coming from many places and may not even really talk to one another. You could include the mention of a website that you might create for your wedding which would have this information on it. Another way to handle it if you want to include the wedding registry information is to consider adding the information to a card that matches the rest of your invitation cards. At least this way it seems a bit more considered and will not throw off the entire look of the invitations.

Modern wedding invitations are more likely to include a broader color palette, layered paper and creative sizes, even pocket fold wedding invitations have become very popular. These are great because the practical uses of a wedding invitation have been thought out a bit more. They make it easier to keep all of the small pieces that are included in a wedding invitation together.

I honestly think that traditional wedding invitations are kinda boring. If you are going to spend all of this money on a wedding, why not have something that is more your style. There are so many amazing options out there these days that can really show off the personality of the couple and make wedding invitations a lot more fun. May be people may worry that this will make the invitation less formal, but this is far from true. The elements that will make an invitation formal include the typography, or fonts, and the color palette. It is also the design that will play a heavy role in the way of what looks formal or not. I highly suggest having someone design your wedding invitations. If you plan on doing them yourself then try not to use cheesy clipart or cheesy type. A good idea is to use a nice photograph for the main element engagement photos work best. Make sure to use a neutral font for the body type and limit the script type to the couple’s names. Following these steps will product a much better result that will be more professional and formal looking.

Whenever you are trying to decide on your wedding invitations, why go with the traditional white card with black type setup instead of having colorful wedding invitations? I could see that some reasons for doing this may be because you are unsure about what makes an invitation formal. Having colorful wedding invitations with imaginative layouts is not the opposite of formal wedding invitations. It is very possible to have elegant invitations with a modern appeal.

Of course the colors that you pick for your wedding invitations should be in keeping with the colors of your wedding. Picking muted rich colors can be an excellent way to have a more formal looking invitation. The idea of picking black and white invitations and the punctuating the theme with a pop of color is also a wonderful way to blend the traditional and the modern and still convey a sense of formality.

Whenever it comes to picking out colors for your color wedding invitation, it may be helpful to know what the different colors mean.
Purple: Is the color of royalty and mystery. It is also associated with spirituality and nobility. Dark purples are richer in tone while lighter purples suggest a fragility and romanticism.

An eggplant purple would go well with beiges and neutrals. This suggests more of an earthy or forest feel. This color palette would be good for a fall wedding if one were to try to do something unexpected.

Purple’s complimentary color is yellow, although it will also look good with a bright green. Use paler versions of purple for a spring wedding. It will also go great with pink.

Blue: Is a calming color that suggests a strength but also a friendliness. Almost everyone likes the color blue. It is a confident color without being too serious. It is associated with stability, intelligence and unity. The color in it’s darker forms can also be seen as sad, in the extremes of the calming effect of blue.

Light blue combined with a pastel pink and yellow is great for a springtime affair. Deep blue and white would be good for a winter wedding. Sky blue and brown are also a wonderful color combination for a wedding.

Red: Is a hot color that brings many different emotions in people. It means love and passion in it’s good form and rage in it’s bad. Red is love and war. Red is also a power color.

When using red use small amounts of it because a little bit can go a long way with this color! This is also a great color to pair with black and white. Red of course goes well with green but it most likely not appropriate to be used at a wedding unless the right shades of these colors are selected.

Yellow: Represents the sun. It can represent happiness and joy. It is a bright warm color. It can signify hope.
It is best to use yellow in conjunction with another color. It is good to use it with a cool color like blue or grey. It can be used with orange to communicate a summer citrus theme. It would also do well as a neutral to go with a rich color when it is toned back. Red and yellow go well together but I would not recommend this combination for a wedding, unless the shades are unconventional.

Green: This color is all about life. This is because it is the main color of living plants. It is representative of growth, energy and the environment. It has some of the calming attributes of blue. It is unique because it is a warm and cool color, having blue and yellow in it.

Green and blue go well together and convey nature and new beginnings. Green coupled with brown and beiges communicate an environmental feel. Purple and green go well together. Lime green, orange and yellow can produce a tropical or fruity tone.

Black: This color can signify mystery and sophistication. It can also be considered to be conventional and serious.

Black goes well with almost any color except for colors that are similar in darkness. Other colors appear brighter when paired with black. It is good to put black together with jewel-toned colors. Black and white by themselves can add a sophistication and reference to the art deco period.

White: This color represents purity and kindness. The white daisy is a symbol of loyal love. It represents completion, and truthfulness. It also conveys a new beginning because you can get any other color out of white since it essentially is all colors.

White is seen as a neutral so it is best to use other colors with it. It can be used well in a summery color palette. It also works for a winter color palette when used sparingly. When it is used in conjunction with pastels it can make for a lovely spring color palette.

Colorful wedding invitations are a way to have unique and modern wedding invitations. You can even pull off something more traditional with a limited color palette if that is what you are going for.

It is very important that whenever you decide on a wedding invitation that you make sure to get a sample wedding invitation before having the company or designer go ahead and create them for you. Some companies will send you a digital copy of the invitation for you to look over for this purpose. This can actually be really great if you’re in a big hurry and need quick turn around, but I really don’t think that this is the best thing to go by whenever you are putting forth this type of expense.

It is very different to see something like this on a computer screen than to actually see it in person. It is important to hold the invitation in your hands and see the texture and true colors of the paper and inks. You cannot truly appreciate this on a computer screen. This also gives you an opportunity to include any sort of vellum or tissue or even ribbons that you may be using as part of the invitation.

Seeing the invitation in person also allows you a better opportunity to catch any type of mistakes or size issues that you hadn’t considered. It really is a good idea to show a good handful of people the invitation so that they also have a chance to help you catch any mistakes. Whoever designed the invitation will not know if there is a misspelling in names or street addresses unless you let them know.

When you receive a wedding invitation sample you should also keep in mind how much time it takes you to actually assemble it. If you are planning on doing the assembly yourself you’ll have to allow for this and the more complicated the invitation is the more time it will take to do the assembly. When you actually receive the sample wedding invitation, this is a great time to try to judge how long it will take you if you plan on going with that wedding invitation.

Another reason to get wedding invitations samples is to try and make a decision about what type of wedding invitation that you would like. Typically, companies will send you a stock sample wedding invitation because the expense of actually doing them custom can add up. Of course some places will go ahead and actually do this but they probably will charge for the sample, and even at that any charge for the stock sample wedding invitation as well. Most companies do not give away free wedding invitation samples because this could really add up to the lot of money.

You might think that getting a wedding invitation sample is an added step that keeps you from getting the invitations done as quickly as you would like. Not rushing the process can really help you in the long run and actually keep you from added expenses and wasted time when you really don’t have a lot of time or money to spend.
